voice on the verge #1: emma tricca
As befits our Meltdown Festival special, the first person to complete tour new questionnaire is a lady whose “pure seductive voice” (Time Out London) is the hallmark of “a genuine folk singer with a sensibility that flies us arrow-straight to the ’60s streets of Greenwich Village or Soho” (Bucketfull Of Brains)…step forward Emma Tricca.
* * *
What’s your earliest memory?
Sitting on my dad’s lap by a drawing desk.
What did you listen to when you were growing up?
Well, the usual suspects I guess…Pentangle and Dylan etc.
Which female musicians have most inspired you?
Definitely Elizabeth Cotten and Odetta for all the social/political reasons you could imagine and their amazing bare talent.
Who was your childhood idol?
Caravaggio
What would you tell your 18-year-old self if you could go back in time?
Grow up!
What would you be if you weren’t a musician?
An architect…maybe a chef…
What’s been the best moment of your career so far?
When I met Odetta…she was bigger then life, I’ll never forget it!
What was the last good book you read?
‘The Music Of Chances’ by Paul Auster…left me in a state of numbness for weeks…nothing has affected in that way before…
What’s your most loved item of clothing?
A yellow ’50s petticoat…it was my grandmother’s.
What are your views on feminism?
Have we got two weeks?
What have you done today to make you feel proud?
Woke up early and played my guitar for two hours before switching the computer on!
What’s your top household tip?
Clean as you go
Who was the first person/band you saw in concert?
Segovia…with my mum
If you had to pick one song from your repertoire to represent your entire body of work, which one would you choose and why?
I think it’ll have to be ‘All Along The Hudson’. ‘Cause it’s about leaving places and randomly meeting people who will affect you forever even though you’ll never see ‘em again…if you see what I mean…
What’s your favourite song to cover and why?
‘Love Minus Zero/No Limits’ by Dylan…’cause it rings clear and true.
Do you have an instrument you’d still like to learn? What’s stopping you?
Violin, time.
Are you multi-lingual?
I guess I am…I tried to write stuff in other languages but I failed miserably!
What’s your biggest fear?
That’s easy! Birds! being attacked by them.
If you chanced upon Aladdin’s lamp what three things would you wish for?
A cure for AIDS, peace in Eritrea and a li’l house in the country.
Would you rather see a ghost or simply have a piece of toast and watch the evening news?
Toast and Marmite…easy!
Tick tock, tick tock. What you waiting, what you waiting for?
That li’l house in the country with a front porch and a 1930 Martin Guitar…yes!
