melissa etheridge campaigns against proposition 8

Cast of ‘Ugly Betty’ weigh in on the issue too

Melissa Etheridge is the latest public figure to join the outcry against Proposition 8, next week’s ballot in the state of California that seeks to overturn the legalisation of gay marriage, branding it “blatantly hateful and fearful”. The Grammy and Academy Award winning singer wed her girlfriend Tammy Lynn Michaels in 2003, the day after the California Supreme Court announced that same-sex unions would be given legal recognition, and the pair have since had a twin son and daughter using an anonymous sperm donor.

Fortunately, Melissa doesn’t seem to think that the constitutional amendment will be passed. “I believe the great citizens of California can see through [Proposition 8],” she writes, adding “The proponents of it have run the most fearful of television ads telling the people that if this doesn’t pass they will have to teach about homos to small grade school children. I can’t seem to recall any relationships ever being taught in school and I can’t find anything about that in this proposition.”

Melissa isn’t the only member of her household to voice their disgust for the proposed amendment. Etheridge writes that her 9 year old adopted son Beckett read about it in the papers and offered his judgement: ”Wow, that’s lame”. “I will be waking up with my children on November 5th and I will be fixing them breakfast as I usually do,” adds Melissa, “I look forward to telling them that prop 8 was defeated. I am sure my son will say, ‘Good, that was lame’”.

In other Proposition 8 news, ‘Ugly Betty’ cast members America Ferrara and her on-screen father and sister Tony Plana and Ana Ortiz recorded this brief anti-8 video message, posted on the No On Prop 8 website a few days ago:
