Bids on handwritten lyrics by Jewel and friends close in 8 daysJewel Kilcher’s music may be about as robust as the US economy these days, but there’s no denying that she’s still a good egg, prone to philanthropic acts of charitable kindness that redeem her somewhat in our eyes. Her latest venture is an online auction of handwritten lyrics in aid of Project Clean Water, the non-profit organisation she co-founded with her mother and brother in the late 1990s to help provide clean water to those who lack easy access to it.
Fully funded by Jewel through ticket sales and donations, Project Clean Water has brought together teams of scientists and engineers to aid impoverished communities in places like Mexico, India, Tibet and throughout Africa. ”Project Clean Water has always been my passion along with music. I am so excited to be able to find a way to tie the two together with this auction,” says Jewel. ”I am also very blessed to have the support of my musician friends who will help make a stronger impact on the donations from the auction.”
Those friends include Gretchen Wilson, Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood, Allison Crowe and several others. While most have simply written on a trusty old sheet of white paper, Perry has jotted the lyrics to ‘I Kissed A Girl’ on a cereal box. An Obama O’s cereal box. But that’s not the item with the highest bids. That honour goes to Jewel herself for a handwritten and signed lyric sheet for her early hit ‘You Were Meant For Me’, currently going for $420.
The auctions opened on December 3rd and close on December 18th. View the goods here.
