Heartfelt tribute marks first anniversary of assassination

Losing your mum is one of life’s most horrifying prospects for anyone, but when your mother is a high-profile politician shot dead at a rally, certain questions are bound to arise. “Was it worth dying for?” is one of them, and is among the many posed by a new rap song written and recorded by Benazir Bhutto’s 18-year old daughter Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, a student at Edinburgh University. The song, called ‘I Would Take The Pain Away’, has been broadcast several times on a state-run TV channel in Pakistan to mark the first anniversary of the Pakistan People’s Party leader’s assassination on December 27th 2007, and has been described by the country’s current Information Minister, Sherry Rehman, as “the tribute of a grieving daughter to her iconic and loving mother.”

A video for the song posted to YouTube features various photographs and video clips of Benazir Bhutto, including footage filmed at the rally where she died, while the lyrics scroll across the bottom of the screen. “Why did you have to go? / why did you have to leave? / Aseefa’s only 14 and I ain’t even ready / I barely hit 18,” goes one particularly poignant verse. “Shot in the back of your ear / so young in 54th year / murdered with three kids left behind / a hopeless nation without you / you are in all their hearts.”

Although Bakhtawar isn’t planning of making a career out of rap, she may yet follow in Benazir’s footsteps and become a politician back in Pakistan. Her father, Asif Ali Zardari, was elected president of the country last September.
