free music friday: bonfire madigan
Avant-garde cellist Madigan Shive, aka Bonfire Madigan, has forged quite the iconoclastic career over the past 17 years. Her early band Tattle Tale – a duo she formed with school friend Jen Wood – may be best remembered for their song ‘Glass Vase, Cello Case’, which soundtracked Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall’s romantic fumble in a grassy field in Jamie Babbit’s ‘But I’m A Cheerleader’, but Madigan’s subsequent career has been sonically more forthright from the start. Over the course of three albums and one EP as Bonfire Madigan, recorded with a revolving cast of musicians, she’s established a fearsome reputation for individuality and uncompromising musicianship. This is, after all, someone who affectionately refers to herself as B.Mad.
A new EP, Lady Saves, was released on Madigan’s 30-something birthday at the end of March but is so far unavailable in the UK. Acting as a precursor to a forthcoming full-length expected in the autumn through Madigan’s own label MoonPuss Music, the EP features album and acoustic versions of the title track – the full title of which is ‘Lady Saves The Dragon (From The Evil Prince)’ – plus remixes from Ninja Tune artist Riz Maslen (aka Neotropic) and San Francisco DJ Dub I.D. of Voltage Music. The current band lineup includes contrabassist Ashley Adams, drummer Matt Lucich and original member Shelley Doty on backing vocals. We’ve got the album version for you to download for free, and it’s every bit as fantastically theatrical and charged as you’d expect from this restless trailblazer.
