free music friday: southside stalkers

In between writing, singing and performing for her solo project Doctors & Dealers, blonde bombshell and infamously hard-partying Sparrow also co-fronts Southside Stalkers with bandmate Indy. Formed just one year earlier, the band recorded their debut album Speed Of Sound in 2006, and partook in some serious (and seriously enjoyable by the look of the photos) touring thereafter. With an as-yet-untitled second gem now waiting in the wings, the band are releasing first single ‘Bones’, a trio of tracks that also includes a re-recording of fan favourite ‘Robert Downey Jnr’ and new song ‘Tudor Man’, with the latter recorded “in 10 minutes [at] 4 am on a Sunday morning. ‘Cause that’s how [they] roll.”

As the titles may indicate, tongue-in-cheek fun seems to fuel the majority of the duo’s songwriting, a perfect balance of dark humour and innocent frolics. Lead song ‘Bones’ is a quirky slice of jangling garage, shot through with a streak of infectious kitsch-pop and bluesy gospel organs. Sparrow’s dreamy, siren vocals are joined by Indy’s comical rumbles for a cheerily adapted version of the somewhat sinister and already anatomically incorrect song ‘Dem Bones’, originally written by James Weldon Johnson in the early 1900s. In the Stalkers’ wonderful, weird and wine-stained world, “the love bone’s connected to the sex bone, and the sex bone’s connected to the knee bone…” Who knew?
