It seems like Tori always brings her A-game when she shows up at the Santa Monica College studios of California’s tastemaker public radio station KCRW, and yesterday’s session was no exception. One of the highlights of her six-song set was the live debut of ‘Ophelia’ from her recent album Abnormally Attracted To Sin [review]. Leaving drummer Matt Chamberlain and bassist Jon Evans on the tour bus, Tori turned in an emotional solo piano performance that puts the album version in the shade somewhat. Tori sounds altogether more vulnerable, singing as if from a deeply personal place. There are a few iffy vocal moments, but they are simply the thin edge of what is arguably a future classic performance. Even the lyric “Ophelia, I feel you”, which on the album seemed awfully lazy, rings quite true here. She’s really into this.
