Some of the UK’s finest indie acts, including Sky Larkin, Slow Club, Los Campesinos!, James Yuill and Dananananaykroyd have joined together to release a Christmas single in aid of the RSPCA. Penned by Bright Light Bright Light’s Rod Thomas and BBC Radio 1 Wales producer Jen Long – collectively known as HUNKS – the single also features members of Copy Haho, Sound Of Arrows, Airborne Toxic Event and The Venus Stare, not to mention Bright Light Bright Light himself.
Out December 14 through Thomas’s own label Self Raising Records, HUNKS & Friends’ ‘The Magic Of Christmas’ is a tongue in cheek pop number that’s not afraid to assert that “Everything’s awesome at Christmas” with blithe cynicism. Buy it for the animal lover in your life.
Meanwhile, ever-reliable DIY label Cherryade Records have done it again with their latest compilation, A Very Cherry Christmas 5, and by ‘it’ we mean stuffed the disc full of enough wry humour and offbeat lyricism to keep us laughing right through to Whitsunday and beyond. Released last week, this fifth instalment of the label’s annual favourite has a whopping 25 songs, including brand new recordings from the likes of Allo Darlin’, Das Wanderlust, Shrag, The Bobby McGee’s and Sparky’s Magic Piano, plus a chance to revisit previous successes from the preceding four albums, like The Lovely Eggs’ ‘Tyrannosaurus Rex For Christmas’ and Tiger MCs’ ‘The Way That You Arrived’.
A Very Cherry Christmas 5 is priced at £6, and there’s a limited offer on over at the Cherryade website where you can get volumes 1–5 all for a tidy sum of £18 + £2 P&P. It’s the perfect present for anyone who likes their stocking stuffed with fun.
