Dessa
‘Dixon’s Girl’

Those who find hip hop a shallow, brash and unintelligent terrain should look no further then Dessa Darling. This educated, affluent artist began her tenure with spoken word and slam poetry, graduating on to hip hop under the tutelage of one MC Yoni (via his Medida crew), and eventually finding her way into Minneapolis collective Doomtree, where she currently resides as the only female member in a crew of nine. She’s opened shows for folk goddess Ani DiFranco, which in itself will be a solid vouch for some, and her False Hopes EP is highly regarded, as is her published collection of poems, Spiral Bound, which was released at the beginning of this year.

‘Dixon’s Girl’ is taken from her highly anticipated debut album A Badly Broken Code, which is available for pre-order and drops on January 19 through US label Rhymesayers. The cinematic, almost theatrical beats on this track come courtesy of fellow Doomtree member MK Larada, and while the arrangements are indisputably big, they are only equal to Dessa’s correspondingly impressive talents. Her vocals are instantly captivating, with a soulful, subtle power, and her background in poetry reveals itself neatly with a bewitching narrative to match that silken voice. Strongly recommended.
