This freebie is the title track of the new EP from YouTube star Julia Nunes, due out February 2 via her own Rude Butler Records. Produced by Jack Conte of fellow YouTubers Pomplamoose (whose brilliant version of Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies’ can be seen here), it’s the New Yorker’s first new material since 2008’s second album I Wrote These and continues her winning combination of smart, funny lyrics with ukulele-based, toe-tappingly percussive arrangements. There’s a toy piano in here too, with extra verve provided by handclaps and some lovely layered vocal harmonies. If it all starts out a little too whimsical for you, listen to the end to hear Julia inject some real passion into the vocals. Playful yet a little bit serious, it promises good things from a still-developing songwriter, and makes the forthcoming EP one to watch out for.
