A solid year of touring has helped secure an already firm foot in the door for this UK five-piece, who formed after meeting at Bath Spa University and got a helping hand from a suitable impressed John Parish along the way. While the band blend indie-pop sensibilities with credible Delta blues, it’s the sweet versus husky girl/boy vocals of Stephanie Ward and Chris Turpin that give Kill It Kid their striking originality, with Turpin frequently evoking the smoky, androgynous drawl of Antony Hegarty. They released their self-titled debut back in October to much critical applause, and look set to continue into the New Year with equal gusto. ‘Just Like Christmas’ is very much a one-off seasonal affair. An upbeat cover of the lead track from 1999’s revered Christmas mini-album from professional miserablists Low, it’s a perfect slice of festive fare, resplendent with jovial violins and knee-slapping heartiness.
Kill It Kid are currently touring with Foy Vance, with dates through the first few weeks of December with a special stripped-down set at the Union Chapel next Tuesday. Catch them at the following venues:
