Tracy Bonham
‘You’re A Mean One, Mr Grinch’

Now here is a name we haven’t heard in a while. Having disappeared from the limelight almost as fast as she rocked into it with 1996’s major label debut The Burdens Of Being Upright, Tracy Bonham has been operating under most people’s radar for the past decade, releasing two more albums and various EPs and maintaining a small but dedicated fanbase on the strength of her live performances and guest spots on albums by Aerosmith and The Blue Man Group. In the run up to her long in-the-works fourth album, Masts Of Manhatta (sic), currently scheduled for an early 2010 release, she’s been trickling out various recordings through her official website. The latest to emerge is a version of alternative Christmas favourite, ‘You’re A Mean One, Mr Grinch’, so expertly covered by Aimee Mann and Grant-Lee Phillips on Aimee’s 2006 Christmas album One More Drifter In The Snow. Impossible to play straight, Tracy’s version is as campy as you like, full of stabbing brass, creeping piano and squealing violin, her vocals aptly sneering and snarky. Good fun.
