mira calix teams up with seefeel’s mark clifford for new album

Electronica alchemist Mira Calix returns with a new collaborative album, lost foundling, on March 1 through Andrea Parker’s newly established record label, Aperture. The thirteen-track album features off the cuff recordings made with her good friend Mark Clifford, most famously a member of fellow Warp Records signees Seefeel, between 1999 and 2004, presenting them in an unadulterated, unmixed form. Having recorded the tracks on various formats ranging from floppy discs and zip drives to DAT tapes, the duo found that it was impossible to play around with the original recordings so they left them untouched as a document of their experimentation.

The release, which falls under the self-explanatory name of cliffordandcalix, tops off an interesting decade for Calix in which she has churned out everything from art installation pieces and film soundtracks to compositions for theatre and opera, not to mention her three solo albums (the most recent of which was 2007’s Eyes Set Against The Sun). Her latest work, ‘My Secret Heart’, commissioned by Streetwise Opera, last week won Calix a British Composer Award for Best Community or Educational Project, with the judges describing the work as “transformational, capturing raw humanity and giving voice to the disenfranchised in a sound-world which is original, absorbing and unsettling.”
