Having returned to London after a brief spell in Berlin, The Sailplanes – known to their mums as Stacey Hine (vocals), Tim Webster (guitar/vocals), Mihai Cucos (bass) and Yola Rodiwicz (drums) – have been hard at work on their second album, the follow-up to 2007’s heavy A Second, Or Ten Years Later. Having toned down their sonic onslaught a little, new track ’The Backs Of My Eyes’, possibly to wind up on said follow-up, turns out to be a mysterious and haunting number in which Stacey shows off the diversity of her remarkable voice by flitting from flirtatious to gothic in the space of a few notes. For their part, Tim, Yola and Mihai are an impressive team when it comes to making a taut fabric of sound, Tim’s skill as a guitarist ringing through loud and clear on this track through a constant changing of pace and tone. With acclaim for their new “rough recordings” gathering pace, The Sailplanes look set to make a big impression very soon.
